deFT Projects was asked by Time Out New York to propose a studio renovation
for a hypothetical client -- a 26 year old media junkie. The project was included
in the annual Time Out New York Home Design Issue.

"Drawing Rooms"
Time Out New York
October 18-24, 2007, p. 38-40

This studio for a 25 year old “culture junkie” uses his expansive media
collection of CDs, DVDs, magazines, books, film posters and other cultural
artifacts as the primary surfaces for the room. Attached on ceiling tracks
from Ikea these movable partitions of media storage function as curtains,
doors, cabinets and wallpaper.

The film posters are hung from fabric-hanging rods that slide along the
tracks. The CDs and DVDs are placed in the common clear Case Logic
sleeves that are usually kept in binders. For this studio, the sleeves are
taken out of binders and affixed to clear shower curtains. These two types
of movable partitions allow the books on the shelves to be concealed or
revealed depending on the use of the room. Additionally, the furniture --
a bed, two console tables and stools -- can be easily rearranged to allow the
room to serve various functions. When placed over the bed, the console
tables function as a backrest for one side of the bed, turning it into a couch.

The flexibility of the system allows the single studio space to serve many
functions. For this client, the act of consuming media is a social one.
His studio, though small, must be capable of accomodating his wide group
of friends in a variety of activities. The movable partitions with storage on
display allow the room to be constantly reinvented for a variety of uses.

Three possible scenarios (among many) are shown -- Screening Room for
watching films, DJ Booth for playing music and dancing, and Library for reading.
